Army Bans Term Battle Buddy. Replaces with Warrior Companion in New ALARACT Message

Our sources in HQDA sent us a copy of ALARACT 126/2016 titled PROFESSIONALIZATION OF CONDUCT – REPLACEMENT OF TERM “BATTLE BUDDY” WITH MORE APPROPRIATE TERM “WARRIOR COMPANION” , which calls for the term “Battle Buddy” to be dropped and replaced with “Warrior Companion“, as the term Battle Buddy is unfair and hurtful to those new soldiers who have not served in battle. This ALARACT is set to be distributed Army wide on Monday. We have included excerpts and posted photos of the ALARACT below.

The ALARACT also includes instructions requiring anyone witnessing someone using the now outdated term of Battle Buddy to report it to their Chain of Command so an  investigation can be initiated.

In my 15 years of service I never thought I would see the day where the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality propagated by helicopter moms would be fully embraced by the Army. We are done for. If I didn’t have this ALARACT sitting in front of me I never would have believed it.

EXCERPTS from ALARACT 126/2016:

5. THE FOLLOWING GUIDANCE ON CONDUCT IS PROVIDED.

5.A. COMMANDERS AND LEADERS WILL REINFORCE A CLIMATE WHERE CURRENT AND FUTURE MEMBERS OF THE ARMY TEAM, INCLUDING SOLDIERS, ARMY CIVILIANS, CONTRACTORS, AND FAMILY MEMBERS, UNDERSTAND THAT A CULTURE OF INCLUSIVENESS IS KEY TO A COHERENT, HIGH-PERFORMING TEAM, AND THAT PHRASES LIKE “BATTLE BUDDY” CAN LEAD TO DIVISIVENESS BY SEGREGATING THOSE WHO’VE SERVED DURING COMBAT FROM THOSE WHO HAVE RECENTLY JOINED THE ARMY TEAM.

5.B. DUE TO A REDUCTION IN DEPLOYMENT OPERATIONS, THE LIKELIHOOD OF NEW MEMBERS OF THE ARMY TEAM HAVING SEEN BATTLE IS INCREASINGLY DWINDLING, AND SO IN THE INTEREST OF INCLUDING ALL MEMBERS OF THE ARMY TEAM, THE PHRASES “BATTLE BUDDY” OR IT’S ABBREVIATION, “BATTLE”, SHOULD BE CURTAILED AND REPLACED WITH THE MORE INCLUSIVE “WARRIOR COMPANION” AND “WARRIOR”, ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE ARMY’S CREATION AND PROMULGATION OF A WARRIOR ETHOS DURING INITIAL ENTRY TRAINING AND THROUGHOUT THE NCOES SYSTEM.
